Historic Organ Study Tours (HOST)
announces a summer tour in
From Venice to the Dolomite Alps!

August 21-29, 2017
9 days, 10 nights

For our 24th annual tour of historic European organs, HOST is very excited to offer a tour in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy.
Our home bases will be that most magical of all cities—Venice; one of the nine esteemed ECHO (Europae Civitates Historicorum Organorum, or European Cities of Historical Organs) cities—Treviso; and one of the most beautiful ski areas in the magnificent Dolomite Alps—Cortina d’Ampezzo. From these, we will explore many beautiful towns and villages throughout the Veneto region and enjoy breathtaking alpine scenery in what have been called “the most beautiful mountains in the world.”

This area of Italy possesses a remarkable number of antique Italian organs from the 18th and 19th centuries, and a substantial number of them have been restored in the last several decades, attesting not only to the relative affluence of the area but also to the determination and priorities of the people. We will encounter organs by famed organbuilders such as Pietro NACCHINI, who was the founder of the school of 18th-century Venetian organ building, Gaetano CALLIDO, Nacchini’s student and the greatest exponent of the school, Francesco DACCI, Giacomo BAZZANI, Giovanni Battista DE LORENZI, Fratelli SERASSI, Gaetano ZANFRETTA, and other great organbuilders of the past. We will also visit several outstanding new instruments by Andrea ZENI, Francesco ZANIN, and Hendrick and Jürgen AHREND.

During our visit to each organ, we’ll hear our leader, Roberto Antonello, present a comprehensive demonstration of the instrument’s characteristic registrations and musical possibilities. Participants will then examine and play the organ. A booklet with information about each organ will be provided to each participant at the beginning of the tour. Photo and recording opportunities will abound. As time permits, other sights complementary to our organ visits will be included in order to make the tour as instructive, varied, and enjoyable as possible.

If you have never been to Venice, of course you must go there, and if you have been there, of course you must return. Consider extra days in the tour hotel before the tour to experience Venice at leisure! Then, come with us on our study tour through the inspiring organ and natural landscapes of the Veneto!
